Typically Swedish

Typically Swedish

Tomorrow is the big day, that’s when we’ll be showing our movies to the rest of the class and our teacher. I’m both nervous and excited. As promised, here’s our short film for you all to see!

What do you think?

P.S Don’t forget to post what you think is typically Swedish using #typicallySwedish on Twitter!

Touring Stockholm with my cousin

Stockholm view

My cousin Stephen arrived from the US on Tuesday. With my busy schedule in school, yesterday was the first chance I had to hang out with him (he’s staying at my mom’s).  I knew he’d already been touring the town on his own the past couple of days so I thought we’d just stroll and see what we see. Turns out, there was a lot to see!

Stockholm city street dance artists

The weather was fantastic, so there was lots of people in town and crazy street artists everywhere. These guys were doing two styles of dancing, the one style was called Waka and the other Kuduro.

Johan & Nyström coffee shop Stockholm

We walked and walked all around town and then it was time to refuel with some coffee and “fika”. I steered us to Johan & Nyström, my brother and I both love this place. They’re coffee experts.

Fika at Johan & Nyström: Coffee, latte, and kanelbulle

I made sure Stephen got a traditional Swedish “fika” – a latte and a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun). He said the kanelbulle was the second best thing he’s ever eaten (the best was an apple bun he had in Vermont).

Stockholm DN half marathon

We did some more walking and ended up in the middle of the Stockholm half marathon. We got there right as they were starting and made our way to the start line to see them go.

Once our legs were tired, we sat by the water for a while before going to dinner. The sun setting over the city was beautiful.

Swedish meatballs, mash potatoes, lingonberries, and gravy.

I’d picked out the perfect place for dinner. I wanted Stephen to have a traditional Swedish meal so we went to Pelikan and had meatballs with lingonberries, mash potatoes, and gravy. Stephen even had a beer from Gotland with his meal.

Despite not having any real plans for the day, I think I did a pretty good job in showing Stephen a good time. He was happy and couldn’t stop talking about what a great day he’d had and how much he loved the food. Now he’s off to camp in the fjords in Norway for a couple of days, next weekend I think I’ll take him to Saturnus to have Stockholms biggest and best kanelbulle.

Swedish Hasbeens for H&M

H&M keep the designer collaborations coming. After letting fashion blogger Elin Kling design a couple of pieces for the high street shop, they’ve now announced their collaboration with Swedish Hasbeens. This Spring you’ll be able to buy the popular wooden soled shoes at a fraction of their price in one of 150 H&M shops across the world.

I’m not personally a fan of Hasbeens, but I’ve got a handful of friends I know will be planning which pair to buy the second they hear the news of their H&M collection. The shoes will be priced at 499 SEK to 599 SEK and are available in sizes 36 to 40. Normally, a pair of Hasbeens are priced at 1 695 SEK and up.

Elin Kling for H&M

By now nobody could have missed the news that Swedish fashion blogger Elin Kling has designed a collection in collaboration with H&M. She’s designed nine pieces of clothing and two accessories. The pieces are minimalistic with little or no details and in natural colors.

I have to say I quite like some of the pieces, and I didn’t expect to. My favorite is probably the leather and suede mix shorts. In the past I haven’t liked much of anything from any of the collaborations H&M have done, and the previous collections have been with world famous designers (latest was Lanvin)! The question is what the stuff looks like in real life, I know things have a tendency to look very good in photos (thank goodness for Photoshop, huh?), but in reality it ain’t so pretty.

What do you think of the pieces?

The Odd Cady

The Odd Cady

And while we’re on the topic of Odd Molly

Of course I didn’t just browse through the runway photos from Odd Molly’s latest collection, I also checked out the lookbook and fell in love with some beautiful items. I even called the store to ask if they had the Odd Cady (this gorgeous hooded scarf). I need to send an express letter to Santa.

Odd Molly

A couple of years ago I interviewed one of the designers of Odd Molly (it’s a designer duo) and let’s just say, she was rather rude. So since then, I’ve pretty much ignored Odd Molly, but today I randomly browsed their website and couldn’t help liking a lot of the things I saw.

I know the brand has become very successful in both Sweden and abroad, and the brand has also received many awards, but I just couldn’t get over the interview I had with the designer.

Anyway, I shall let bygones be bygones and draw inspiration from the runway photos, I’m really into the layer-upon-layer and bohemic kind of style, especially in chilly winter weather it’s the perfect way to stay stylish while keeping warm!

I did it!

One batch down, four to go. After making my first ever batch of Lussebullar on Monday I have learned both a great recipe and that I have to make five batches to get to one hundred Lussebullar, which is the order I have recieved. I’ve got over a month before they need to be delivered though, so I’m not worried. I mean, I’ve only got 80 to go now!

Swedish Bullar

I just made Swedish bullar (cinnamon/cardamon buns) or “Kardemummaknyten” as this particular type is called. They’re for my mom’s co-worker who asked me to bake for her when I was at the hospital volunteer-baking yesterday. She said she never has time to bake so she was wondering if she could pay me to bake for her. Said and done!

I’ve never baked bullar before in my life, so I’m pretty happy with the way they turned out! I hope they taste good too! Would you shop at my bakery?

Your eyes followed my every step that night

I love this song. I heard it last weekend when I was at Barista, and I had to find it as soon as I came home. It’s Melissa Horn‘s song “Kvar i nåt jag lämnat”. Usually, I don’t like listening to Swedish songs but this one is beautiful. I’m sorry to english readers who can’t understand the lyrics. It’s worth a listen anyway though, it’s gorgeous. Melissa Horn has several other beautiful songs too, so check her out!

I just installed the Shazam-app on my phone so that I don’t have to guess which songs they’re playing at Barista anymore, they’re always playing such nice music there.

Midsummer flowers

Tomorrow is midsummer’s eve in Sweden, but we’re celebrating it a little bit earlier with a dinner this evening. The plants on our porch have really grown a lot the past couple of weeks and look so beautiful! I made a wreath of flowers to go on the door too. I kind of went nuts with my camera and its macro, flowers are such easy subjects. Here’s some pictures!

The wreath on the door!

I hung the Swedish flag!

I have a cucumber plant, with a real cucumber growing on it!

All those flowers need a lot of water.

Freshly picked flowers are spread through the house too!
